What is a "disciple"?

It's pretty clear what our mission is. Jesus didn't leave it to conjecture or speculation.  He said:

Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV) 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Since that's the mandate and what God is using as His 'scorecard', what is a 'disciple'?  What makes someone a disciple and what do disciples do?

I look forward to reading your responses!

  1. Paul, in it's simplest form a disciple is a follower, a student of the one he is following. To me the question goes to, how is the disciple's life affected by what he is learning? When it comes to Christ making an impact on our (my) life there is NO area of my life that is beyond the reach of Christ. To be a true disciple the teachings of Christ should impact my total life - church, home, vocation, leisure, friendships, what I read, what I watch on TV - everything.
